In a statement, Airbus said that France's DGS (Direction Générale de la Santé) actively supported the kite by providing all medical specifications related to COVID-19 patients in intensive and low care. The work lasted six weeks.

"The concept has subsequently been improved and Airbus is now able to offer an advanced solution to any customer wishing to carry out medevac operations," says the aircraft designer.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected many aircraft, including the A340-600. Thus, adequate capacity is available for the medevac solution.

A330/A340 Medevac conversion time is approximately five weeks from contract signature (assuming medical equipment is available). The conversions will be carried out at the Airbus plant in Getafe, Spain.

Meanwhile, Embraer has unveiled a medevac offering for its Phenom 300 series aircraft. The solution, called the Phenom 300MED, is customizable but also available as a retrofit. It was developed in collaboration with interior design company Aerolite and overtone, a consultancy and implementation services provider.

Embraer and umlaut are jointly developing and certifying a new Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) using Aerolite equipment, the Brazilian aircraft designer explained in a statement.

In recent months, many operators have attempted to carry people on board their aircraft to carry critical medical supplies and PPE, using some creative engineering solutions to protect aircraft seats and other internal structures on board. Now the aviation industry is gaining momentum again with air ambulance configurations for aircraft.
